COUNTY — Calls are growing louder over a trio of lawsuits and attendance regarding two county supervisors.

Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer and Chairwoman Nora Vargas each came under fire for two civil suits filed, while residents are targeting Lawson-Remer’s meeting attendance record, according to court records and attendance tallies by residents. Lawson-Remer was sued in small claims court over an outstanding debt of $1,119.50 by Aspen Leaf Preschool, according to court records.

Vargas, meanwhile, was sued twice — once for $43,253.55 by Bankers Healthcare Group LLC and another for $11,170.18 by Bank of America — for failure to pay back a promissory note and credit card bill, respectively. Those cases are still pending, per court records.

As for Lawson-Remer’s debt, her communications director James Canning said she has paid off the debt. According to a source who asked not to be named, the case will be dismissed once the court processes the payment. Canning said it was a simple mix-up of the invoice going into a spam folder and once she was alerted to the debt, it was paid.

Also, Lawson-Remer has been late or missed dozens of meetings ranging from the Board of Supervisors to committee meetings with the county, the San Diego Association of Governments and the San Diego County Water Authority, according to residents who have gone through archive meeting videos and meeting minutes.

Canning also strongly refuted the claims of Lawson-Remer’s attendance and attacked former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who is running against Lawson-Remer for the District 3 seat, as driving the narrative behind social media posts questioning Lawson-Remer’s attendance record.
