Local candidates events set
Carlsbad, Escondido and Vista will host candidate forums, while Encinitas candidates engage in a meet-and-greet for its candidates
NORTH COUNTY — The campaigns are coming down to the home stretch and four local chambers of commerce will be hosting candidate events on Monday and Oct. 3.
The forums will host City Council candidates in Carlsbad, Escondido and Vista. In Encinitas, the chamber will host a meet-and-greet. The Carlsbad, Encinitas and Solana Beach chamers also hosted a forum for the San Diego County Board of Supervisors District 3 race between incumbent Terra Lawson-Remer and former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. County election offices will begin mailing vote-by-mail ballots on Oct. 7, according to the California Secretary of State website. Secure drop boxes open on Oct. 8 and from Oct. 7-Nov. 5 is the voting period to return mail-in ballots.
The last day to register to vote is Oct. 21, per the SOS, although same-day voter registration is available at the San Diego County Registrar of Voters or a voting location up to and including Election Day, which is Nov. 5.
On Election Day, the polls are open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. and vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked no later than Nov. 5.
Carlsbad
The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce is hosting its candidate forum from 5:30-7 p.m. on Oct. 3 at The Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa, 5480 Grand Pacific Dr. There are two races this cycle as the District 2 and 4 seats are up.
In District 2, Tyler Collins and Kevin Shin are both first-time candidates, while in D4, incumbent Teresa Acosta takes on challenger Greg Day. The event is free and open to the public.
Encinitas
The Encinitas Chamber of Commerce’s candidate meet-and-greet will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday at MiraCosta College, Room 1131, 3333 Manchester Ave. Three seats are up this cycle including mayor and Districts 1 and 2.
The mayoral race features incumbent Mayor Tony Kranz against Councilman Bruce Ehlers; the D1 race is between incumbent Allison Blackwell and challenge Luke Shaffer; and the D2 contest features Jim O’Hara and Destiny Preston.

Escondido
The Escondido Chamber of Commerce is hosting its forum from 7-9 p.m. on Oct 3 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, conference center. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Seats are up in D3 and 4 with the D3 tilt featuring incumbent Christian Garcia, who will take on Veronica Cigarroa and Christine Spencer. In D4, Judy Fitzgerald will face Roderick “Rod” Howell.

Vista
This is the second forum for the candidates, although the Vista Chamber of Commerce hosts this one and is specific to the City Council races. Up this year are the D2 and D3 seats and the forum will be from 6-7:30 p.m. on Monday at the Vista Civic Center community room, 200 Civic Center Dr.0
In D2, Jeff Fox and Anthony White are running as City Councilman Joe Green opted not to seek re-election. In D3, incumbent Katie Melendez faces challenger Denisse Barragan.
